West Indies reached 194 for three against Pakistan at stumps on a weather-affected first day of the first cricket Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba on Saturday.

On a day when an hour’s play of the first session was wasted due to rain and then an early closure was applied due to bad light, Kavem Hodge and captain Shai Hope came together at 103 for three and have so far added 88 runs for the unfinished fourth wicket from 187 balls. Hodge had earlier put on 51 runs for the second wicket with Tagenarine Chanderpaul (21) and 42 runs for the third wicket with Amir Jangoo (21).

Hodge was batting on 83 from 181 balls with nine fours, while Hope was 39 not out from 91 balls with two fours.

Mohammad Abbas, bowling at an average speed of around 125kph, was the most impressive Pakistan bowler and finished with figures of two for 44. Abbas mostly swung the ball into the right-hander and, with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan standing up to the stumps, caused a lot of worry for the established and set batters.

Abbas had opener Brandan King in the first session when the opener dragged the ball on to his stumps. The veteran bowler’s second wicket of the day was that of Amir Jangoo, who had been adjudged not out but had the lbw decision overturned when television replays confirmed the ball would have hit the top half of the middle stump.

However, Abbas’s two reviews against Chanderpaul and Hodge were struck down, leaving Pakistan with just one review.

No other Pakistan bowler threatened the West Indies batters despite several uhh-and-ahhs by debutant Ali Usman, who returned figures of 12-1-34-0. Aamir Jamal accounted for Chanderpaul but ended opening day with figures of 10-1-54-1.

Fast bowlers Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Ali bowled their hearts out on a slow and low wicket, but looked less threatening than Abbas. Shahzad had none for 32 from 14 overs, while Ali had conceded 21 runs from 12 overs after consistently bowling at around 132kph.
