SNGPL & Wapda Reach President’s Trophy Final After KRL Suffer Innings Defeat

LAHORE: SNGPL and WAPDA qualified for the President’s Trophy final in contrasting styles on the penultimate day of the final round action in Karachi on Wednesday.

SNGPL, after conceding a 10-run first-innings lead, successfully defended a 172-run target to defeat OGDCL by 23 runs, while WAPDA secured a crucial 18-run first-innings lead over State Bank of Pakistan. SNGPL and WAPDA’s progression was made easier by Ghani Glass, who defeated third-placed KRL by an innings and 101 runs.

In the other match, debutants Sahir Associates saved their best for the final round match in which they defeated defending champions PTV by 10 wickets.

Although the WAPDA-SBP match is still ongoing with SBP leading by 244 runs with seven wickets remaining, the points table is now pretty much clear with SNGPL sitting on top with 137 points, followed by WAPDA on 114 points. KRL finished with 100 points, followed by Ghani Glass (94), PTV (89), SBP (85), Sahir Associates (80), and OGDCL (65).

The five-day final of the President’s Trophy will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium from 8 February.

At the UBL Sports Complex, SNGPL resumed their second innings at 102 for six, leading OGDCL by 92 runs. They were bowled out for 181 – thanks to Mohammad Awais Zafar’s invaluable 51 and Aamir Jamal’s 31. For OGDCL, Test spinner Asif Afridi returned figures of 26.4-3-64-6 to complete match figures of 12 for 135. Mohammad Amir Khan, who took two for 49 in the first innings, grabbed four for 74.

In turn, OGDCL were bowled out for 148 with Sajid Khan following up his first-innings figures of four for 90 with five for 71. Shehzad Gul also bowled well for his three for 30.

At the KCCA Stadium, Ghani Glass added 11 runs to their overnight score of 343 for nine to be dismissed for 354. KRL, who had scored 189 in their first innings, were sent packing for an embarrassing 64 runs in the second innings.

Shoaib Akhtar Junior returned figures of 10-5-28-5 and Sameen Gul recorded analysis of 10.4-3-31-4 to wrap up KRL’s second innings in less than 21 overs. Sameen had claimed six for 42 in the first innings, and the second-innings tally gave him match figures of 10 for 73.

At the Oval Academy, PTV, trailing Sahir Associates by 122 runs on the first innings, were bowled out for 138 in their second innings. Sahir Associates scored the required runs without losing a wicket.

PTV’s second innings was rocked by Hafiz Mohammad Suleman, who collected four wickets for 21 runs, while Razaullah and Khan Zeb picked up two wickets each, conceding 34 and 67 runs, respectively.

PTV’s top-scorer in the second innings was Taimur Khan, who scored 54, while Mohammad Taha scored 32 and Mohammad Mohsin 21.

At the State Bank Stadium, WAPDA, replying to State Bank’s 394, were dismissed for 412 after starting the day at 282 for five. Bismillah Khan scored a fine 115 from 203 balls with 14 fours and two sixes. He added 143 runs for the sixth wicket with Khalid Usman, who scored a 120-ball 62 with seven fours.

For SBP, Mohammad Ismail was the pick of the bowlers with four for 64, while Shahid Aziz and Kashif Bhatti took two wickets each.

When play ended, SBP had reached 262 for three with Mohammad Ghazi Ghori batting on 85 and Kashif Ali on 32. Other notable run-scorers were Mohammad Hurraira (72), Hasan Raza (38), and Abdullah Fazal (27).
