LAHORE: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday unveiled the official qualification process for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. But for Pakistan – a nation with a proud T20 pedigree – the announcement brings a stark realisation: the road to Olympic glory will be fraught with fierce competition and significant scheduling hurdles.

For a country that boasts the 2009 Men’s T20 World Cup title and back-to-back Asian Games gold medals for the women’s side in 2010 and 2014, merely qualifying for the six-team LA 2028 event will require navigating high-stakes global qualifiers in 2027.

Men’s Qualification

Under the ICC’s criteria, four of the six men’s Olympic berths will be awarded directly to the highest-ranked teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania as of 31 December 2026, provided they sit within the top 15. The fifth spot is provisionally allocated to the host nation, the USA (currently ranked 13th), provided retain their place in the top 15.

For the Men in Green, the math is unforgiving. Despite a heavy workload of 68 T20Is since 2024 – yielding a respectable 37 wins and 28 losses – Pakistan’s overall ranking points have steadily slipped. This slide has left them in a precarious position. Arch-rival India currently dominates the Asian region from the No.1 spot globally (272 points). Trailing by a massive 32 points, sixth-ranked Pakistan has virtually no mathematical chance of bridging that gap by the December 2026 cut-off to secure the direct continental berth.

This means the 2009 World T20 champions are destined for the grueling eight-team ICC Olympic Qualifier in 2027, where they will battle for a single remaining ticket to Los Angeles against heavyweights like New Zealand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and potentially the winner of a dedicated Caribbean Qualifier. (Note: Because the West Indies is a composite board, they must play a Caribbean Qualifier if ranked in the top eight, with the winning island advancing to the 2027 global qualifier).

Complicating matters heavily for Pakistan is a concerning lack of future preparation. While they have been highly active over the last two years, the Pakistan men’s team currently has absolutely no bilateral T20I cricket scheduled for the second half of 2027. Their participation in the Asian Games in September/October currently serves as their sole high-profile preparation before stepping into the do-or-die Olympic Qualifier.

Women’s Qualification

The Olympic picture for the women’s game is equally intense. Four of the six spots have already been snatched up by Australia, Great Britain (via England), India, and South Africa following their continental dominance at the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

With the USA requiring a top-15 ranking to secure the host’s berth (they are currently 20th), the sixth and final spot will be decided at the eight-team ICC Women’s Olympic Qualifier in 2027. In the scenario of the USA unable to break into the top 15, New Zealand will grab the fifth position by virtue of being the highest ranked side after the top four qualifiers.

The Pakistan women’s team knows what it takes to win on multi-sport stages, having famously clinched Asian Games gold in Guangzhou (2010) and Incheon (2014). Currently ranked 8th in the world, they are squarely in the mix for the 2027 Qualifier, where they will likely face fierce resistance from teams like New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland, Thailand and a Caribbean representative.

However, unlike their male counterparts, the women’s side has an immediate pathway to build crucial momentum and vital ranking points. Their preparation begins in earnest with their upcoming away series against Sri Lanka. Success in the island nation will be a vital first step in forging a squad capable of surviving the 2027 Qualifiers and bringing Pakistan’s Olympic cricket dream to life in Los Angeles.
