Pakistan’s last scheduled domestic 50-over match before the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 will be played more than 12 months before the tournament despite the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) presenting the 2026-27 domestic calendar as one designed to support preparations for the global event.

The PCB on Wednesday unveiled its men’s domestic structure, introducing a four-team National Champions Cup (List-A) in Multan from 11 to 18 August, followed by the eight-team President’s Cup (List-A) in Karachi from 21 August to 8 September. Details of the participating teams and event format for both competitions were not announced.

In announcing the calendar, the PCB stated: “At the heart of the 2026-27 domestic calendar sit two List-A tournaments, which kick-start the season as focus shifts to preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2027.”

However, once the President’s Cup concludes on 8 September 2026, the domestic season switches entirely to first-class cricket before ending with T20 competitions in February and March, leaving no scheduled List-A cricket during the 2027 calendar year, when Pakistan are also expected to compete in the ACC 50-over Asia Cup along with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

The schedule, therefore, provides fewer than three weeks of domestic one-day cricket before a gap of more than a year leading into the World Cup, raising questions over whether it offers sustained preparation for the 50-over format. While first-class and T20 cricket remain vital to player development, neither replicates the tactical and technical demands of ODI cricket.

The National T20 Cup will be split into 12-team Silver (5-19 February) and 10-team Gold (23 February-6 March) competitions in Lahore. Subject to confirmation of the lunar calendar, both events are expected to overlap significantly with Ramadan.

With the PSL Players Draft traditionally held before the tournament to allow franchises time for planning, performances in the National T20 Cup are unlikely to influence squad selection for that season. The PCB has not announced dates for the 2027 Pakistan Super League, stating these will be released separately.

Among the notable structural changes is the elevation of the former Hanif Mohammad Trophy into the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Silver, which will now carry first-class status alongside the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Gold under a promotion and relegation system.

The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Gold (eight teams) and Silver (12 teams) will run concurrently from 1 November, with the bottom Gold side relegated and the Silver champions promoted for the 2027-28 season.

The tournament also overlaps with Pakistan’s scheduled two-Test home series against Sri Lanka under the ICC Future Tours Programme in November, potentially depriving regional teams of players selected for national duty.

The departmental President’s Trophy Grade-I first-class competition will be staged from 12 September to 28 October, while the three-day President’s Trophy Grade-II (Gold and Silver) will run concurrently until 19 October. The PCB has yet to announce whether promotion and relegation will also apply to the Grade-II competitions.
