Sri Lanka Beat Pakistan In T20 World Cup Warm-Up
LAHORE: Sri Lanka Women defeated Pakistan Women by nine wickets in an ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up match in Derby on Saturday. Batting first, Pakistan posted 168 for eight, which proved a comfortable target for Sri Lanka, who romped to victory with one wicket in hand in 18.4 overs.
Opener Chamari Athapaththu scored a quickfire 94 from 58 balls with nine fours and five sixes, while Vishmi Gunaratne remained unbeaten on 63 from 50 balls with four fours and three sixes. The pair put on 159 runs for the first wicket before the partnership was broken with 10 runs required, when Athapaththu was caught at mid-wicket attempting to clear the boundary for her sixth six and complete her century.
Pakistan’s innings featured even contributions throughout after captain Fatima Sana won the toss and elected to bat. Fatima top-scored with 37 from 26 balls with four fours and a six, while Muneeba Ali struck a 21-ball 36 with five fours. Gull Feroza (26), Aliya Riaz (22), Saira Jabeen (12) and Ayesha Zafar (10) were the other batters to reach double figures.
Sri Lanka’s fast bowler Chethana Vimukthi was the standout performer with the ball, returning figures of four overs for 31 runs and four wickets. Her performance suggested that conditions during the tournament proper may favour pace bowling over spin — a factor Pakistan will need to account for when they open their T20 World Cup campaign against India at Edgbaston on 14 June.
Pakistan’s next warm-up match is against Scotland on Tuesday at the same venue.
