LAHORE: A fifth career century by Mubasir Khan and an unbeaten half-century by Awais Zafar helped SNGPL reach 308 for four against Ghani Glass at stumps on day one of the fifth-round President’s Trophy match at the National Bank Stadium on Wednesday.

Mubasir, appearing in his 47th first-class match, was batting on 113, and with him was Awais Zafar on 73 not out as the two batters lifted SNGPL from 107 for four to 308 for four by adding 201 runs for the unfinished fifth wicket. Mubasir’s 171-ball innings includes 12 fours, while Awais has struck eight fours and a six in a 148-ball knock.

SNGPL, who had elected to bat first, were rocked by Test fast bowler Mir Hamza, who finished the day with three for 25 from 15 overs.

It was a decent recovery from SNGPL after they capitulated for 37 all-out in pursuit of a 40-run target at the same venue against defending champions PTV. Their inept batting display made headlines in the cricket-playing world as PTV broke the 232-year world record for successfully defending the lowest score in first-class cricket.

At the KCCA Stadium, fast bowler Naqeebullah returned figures of 18-5-36-5 to help WAPDA dismiss OGDCL for 159 in 57.1 overs. Naqeebullah was well supported by Asghar Durrani (two for 17) and Khalid Usman (two for 27).

After OGDCL had slipped to 29 for four, Danish Aziz (69) and Abbas Ali (31) stitched a 77-run fifth-wicket partnership to repair the damage. But Abbas’s departure at the score of 110 resulted in another collapse, with Danish becoming the last batter to be dismissed after facing 106 balls and hitting seven fours and a six.

When play ended, WAPDA had reached 56 for two with Mohammad Ammar batting on 24.

A sixth career century by opener Shamyl Hussain steered PTV to 348 for six against KRL at the UBL Sports Complex. Shamyl was dismissed after scoring a well-constructed 111 from 104 balls with 12 fours and six sixes.

Shamyl put on 167 runs for the opening wicket with Waqar Hussain, who scored a 118-ball 69 with 10 fours. Shamyl then added 53 runs for the second wicket with Mohammad Taha, who was batting on a 166-ball 82 with nine fours.

Taha and Mohammad Mohsin (47) further strengthened PTV’s position by adding another 94 runs for the third wicket before KRL struck with three late wickets through Mohammad Hamza, who finished the day with three for 77. Aqib Liaqat bagged two for 73.

Debutants Sahir Associates saw off the opening day’s play against State Bank of Pakistan at 229 for seven at the State Bank Stadium. Their innings was highlighted by two decent partnerships – a 70-run stand for the fifth wicket between Mohammad Faiq and Mohammad Saleem, and a 100-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Saleem and Mohammad Mohsin Khan.

Mohsin top-scored with a 99-ball 62 with seven fours before falling shortly before stumps, while Saleem was still batting on 59 from 161 balls with three fours and two sixes. Faiq contributed 48 from 109 balls with eight fours and a six.

For State Bank, Niaz Khan was the pick of the bowlers with three for 28.

After four rounds, WAPDA heads the points table with 81, followed by PTV (71), KRL (68), and SNGPL (66). Ghani Glass leads the second half of the eight-team tournament with 58 points, followed by OGDCL (43), SBP (33), and Sahir Associates (28).
