LAHORE: PTV opener Shamyl Hussain stroked a superlative 143 and left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar of Ghani Glass claimed six for 21 to help their sides keep their semi-final hopes alive in the President’s One-Day Tournament on Thursday.

In the sixth-round matches, PTV defeated SNGPL by 21 runs, Ghani Glass defeated KRL by 35 runs, OGDCL defeated Sahir Associates by three wickets, and defending champions State Bank of Pakistan defeated WAPDA by 110 runs.

This means after the penultimate round matches, OGDCL have sealed their place in the semi-final stage with six straight wins, while KRL, SNGPL, Sahir Associates, Ghani Glass and PTV are contesting for the remaining three positions after sitting on three wins apiece. Defending champions State Bank of Pakistan and WAPDA are out of contention for the last-four stage.

At the National Bank Stadium, Shamyl Hussain and Mohammad Suleman put on 198 runs for the third wicket to propel PTV to 321 for nine. In turn, SNGPL finished at 300 for nine.

Shamyl, captaining the side, belted 12 fours and six sixes in a 124-ball 143. Suleman was also in good form, hitting four fours and five sixes in an 88-ball 86. However, PTV batters failed to capitalise from the third wicket stand as they lost their last seven wickets for 80 runs to finish at 321 for nine after being 238 for two.

In turn, SNGPL’s Kamran Ghulam scored 66, Mohammad Shahzad 53 and Shan Masood 45, but none of them could convert these starts into match-winning innings as their side finished at 300 for nine. Faisal Akram was the pick of PTV bowlers with three for 49, while Israr Hussain and Ahmed Daniyal bagged two wickets each.

At the KCCA Stadium and chasing 201 runs for victory, openers Shahzaib Khan (52, 72b, 5×4, 2×6) and Saad Baig (45, 52b, 5×4, 1×6) had provided KRL a 107-run opening wicket stand before the Islamabad-based side capitulated against Ghani Glass’s Zafar Gohar (10-2-21-6) and Noman Ali (two for 40) to be spun out for 165 in 41.2 overs.

Earlier, KRL’s Sufyan Muqeem had claimed four for 22 to restrict the Lahore-based Ghani Glass to 200 all-out in 40.1 overs with Sharjeel Khan (58), Tayyab Tahir (33), Mohsin Riaz (32), Hussain Talat (26) and Hammad Butt (20) making even contributions.

At the UBL Sports Complex, Sahir Associates batted first against OGDCL and posted 278 for nine with Asim Ali Nasir top-scoring with 88 from 97 balls with 13 fours. Together with Faham-ul-Haq, who scored a 78-ball 60 with six fours and a six, Asim added 143 runs for the second wicket. For OGDCL, Mohammad Huzaifa was the standout bowler with figures of 10-1-57-4, while Adil Amin grabbed two for 43.

In turn, OGDCL were well-served by Abbas Ali, Danish Aziz and Maaz Sadaqat, who scored half-centuries and guided their side to their sixth successive victory with three wickets and 27 balls to spare. Abbas scored 68 (63b, 4×4, 4×6), Danish remained not out on 55 (59b, 5×4, 1×6) and Maaz contributed 50 (30b, 11×4). For Sahir Associates, Faham completed an all-round performance by following up his 60 with two for 40.

At the Naya Nazimabad Cricket Ground, SBP’s Kashif Bhatti produced a match-winning all-round performance and outshone WAPDA’s Sharoon Siraj’s excellent bowling achievement as the bankers won the match by 110 runs in a fixture between the two bottom-placed sides.

Off-spinner Sharoon returned figures of 10-0-29-6 as defending champions SBP collected 257 for nine with Kashif Bhatti scoring a 70-ball 65 with four fours and four sixes, and Ghazi Ghori scoring a 70-ball 58 with four fours and a six. The two batters stitched a 119-run seventh-wicket partnership after SBP had slipped to 101 for six.

Kashif then completed a good day in the office when he claimed three for 36 to combine with his Salman Ali Agha (four for 40) to bowl WAPDA out for 147 in 37 overs. Rafay Rana (28), Bismillah Khan (24) and Nabi Gul (22) were the notable run-getters.

This was SBP’s second win in six matches, and WAPDA’s fifth defeat in six fixtures.
