LAHORE: The Pakistan Super League 2026 play-offs are set to deliver high-octane cricket over four days at the backend of the 44-match event, with four contrasting sides battling for the right to contest the 3 May final at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The four sides in action this week include 2017 champions Peshawar Zalmi; 2016, 2018 and 2024 winners Islamabad United; 2021 champions Multan Sultans and debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen.

Last year’s finalists, Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators finished fifth and seventh, respectively, while Karachi Kings ended sixth on equal points with arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars. Rawalpindiz, the other side, made their debut in 2026 and finished at the bottom with nine losses.

THE QUALIFIER

Peshawar Zalmi enter the Qualifier as the dominant force of PSL 2026. With eight wins from 10 matches and 17 points, they have been the standout side of the league stage — and the statistics back it up.

Their bowling attack, led by the remarkable Sufiyan Muqeem, has taken wickets at just 14.15 runs per wicket, the best in the competition. The left-arm wrist spinner ends the league stage with 19 wickets with an economy-rate of 7.47, having taken at least three wickets in four consecutive matches — a feat achieved only once before in PSL history.

With the bat, Peshawar have been equally formidable.

Kusal Mendis leads the tournament’s batting charts with 500 runs, including a century and four half-centuries, while Babar Azam — who completed his 12th T20 century against Quetta Gladiators — is close behind on 485. The pair’s record 191-run second-wicket partnership against Karachi Kings was the defining batting moment of the league stage.

Islamabad United, finishing second on 13 points, will be no pushover. Their campaign has been built around consistent team performances rather than individual brilliance.

Teenage opener Sameer Minhas has been their batting revelation, scoring 82 not out (vs Gladiators), 70 (Rawalpindiz) and 58 (Kings) in three of his most notable innings. In nine matches, Sameer has aggregated 299 runs (42.71 average, 151.77 strike-rate). Devon Conway, Sameer’s opening partner, is their second most successful batter with 265 runs, while Mark Chapman has totalled 198 runs.

Shadab Khan’s all-round performances (145 runs and 14 wickets) and Chris Green’s three-wicket haul in the demolition of Lahore Qalandars and Richard Gleeson’s three-wicket demolisition of Hyderabad Kingsmen have been highlights of a disciplined campaign.

However, their shock defeat to winless Rawalpindiz in the final week of league cricket exposed a vulnerability that Zalmi’s bowlers will be eager to exploit.

The winner of the Qualifier progresses directly to the final, giving both sides extra incentive to win — one more victory and they are in the showpiece event.

ELIMINATOR ONE

This is the match that captures the imagination. Multan Sultans, the competition’s highest run-scorers and only team to average over 10 runs per over, take on Hyderabad Kingsmen — the story of PSL 2026.

Sultans enter as the more fancied side. Steve Smith’s maiden PSL century against Hyderabad Kingsmen, Sahibzada Farhan’s consistent run-scoring and the late-season form of Arafat Minhas give them a balanced, experienced line-up. Smith is their side’s top run-scorer with 367 runs, followed by Sahibzada Farhan 365. Arafat has complemented his 143 runs with nine wickets at an average of 22.66 and economy-rate of 8.50.

Peter Siddle, at 41, has been a revelation with the ball, while Faisal Akram’s four-wicket haul against Rawalpindiz hinted at match-winning potential at crucial moments.

But Kingsmen are the tournament’s most compelling story. Written off after losing their first four matches and bowled out for just 80 against Islamabad United, they roared back to win four successive matches — culminating in the extraordinary 244 for six against Rawalpindiz that eliminated Lahore Qalandars on net run-rate.

Usman Khan’s four PSL centuries — more than any other batter in the competition’s history — and Glenn Maxwell’s devastating late-tournament form make them a genuine threat. Their young pace attack, led by Mohammad Ali (13 wickets) and Hunain Shah (12 wickets), has grown in confidence with every passing match.

The loser is eliminated, which adds enormous pressure to what promises to be a fascinating contest between Sultans’ experience and Kingsmen’s momentum.

THE WIDER PICTURE

The play-offs also reflect a broader narrative of PSL 2026. It has been a tournament of records — Babar’s 12th T20 century, Mendis’ 500 runs, the 191-run partnership, the competition’s highest ever total of 255 for three, Zalmi’s 159-run victory margin and Ali Raza becoming the youngest bowler to claim a PSL hat-trick.

It has also been a tournament of controversy — ball turning pink in Hyderabad Kingsmen’s opening match, Fakhar Zaman’s two-match suspension for changing the condition of the ball, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sikandar Raza breaching team hotel security protocols, record fine on Naseem Shah for a social media post, the Muzarabani and Shanaka contract sagas, owners expressing concerns on the event scheduling, and the new Multan Sultans owner mocking rival owners and teams in various Podcasts and social media posts.

Four teams remain. One will lift the trophy in Lahore on 3 May in front of the spectators. Peshawar Zalmi look the most complete side on paper, but in T20 cricket — as Hyderabad Kingsmen have so dramatically demonstrated — momentum can shift in the blink of an eye.
