DHAKA: Shan Masood suffered his 11th defeat in 15 Tests as Pakistan captain as his side succumbed to a familiar second-innings batting collapse that handed Bangladesh a 104-run victory in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.

After nearly half of the penultimate day’s play was lost to bad weather and Bangladesh batted 20 overs on the fifth morning, all Pakistan had to do was bat out the remaining two sessions after being set a 268-run target. However, they were unable to do so and collapsed from 119 for three to 163 all out in 52.5 overs, with Nahid Rana taking five for 40 and Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam claiming two wickets apiece.

For Pakistan, debutant Abdullah Fazal was the standout batter, following up his first-innings 60 with 66. Salman Ali Agha scored 25, while Azan Awais, Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan all contributed 15 runs each.

This was Shan’s 11th defeat in 15 Tests as captain, drawing level with Inzamam-ul-Haq, who lost the same number but across 31 matches. Misbah-ul-Haq leads the list of Pakistan captains with the most Test defeats, with 19, though he also remains Pakistan’s most successful Test captain with 26 wins from 56 Tests between 2010 and 2017.

The collapse continued a troubling pattern.

When Bangladesh toured Pakistan in August 2024, identical second-innings collapses had resulted in a 2-0 series loss. In the first Test, Pakistan crumbled from 66 for two to 146 all out, setting the stage for Bangladesh’s 10-wicket victory. In the second, they plummeted from 62 for three to 172 all out, allowing Bangladesh to win by five wickets.

The pattern has extended beyond Bangladesh. Against the West Indies in Multan in January 2025, Pakistan were dismissed for 133 to lose by 120 runs, while in the second Test against South Africa, they slipped from 60 for three to 138 all out in 49.3 overs, handing the visitors an eight-wicket victory.

In the second innings in Mirpur, Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed in the first over before Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal took the score to 57. Azan then attempted to cut a straight delivery from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and was bowled. Shan Masood was caught behind off Nahid Rana, Abdullah Fazal was trapped in front attempting to play Taijul Islam off the back foot, Salman Ali Agha was caught in the gully off Taskin Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan was bowled leaving a straight one from Nahid, Hasan Ali was caught in front off Taijul, Noman Ali was adjudged lbw beaten by Nahid’s pace, and Shaheen Shah Afridi was bounced out by Nahid — a taste of his own medicine.

Earlier, Bangladesh had resumed their second innings at 152 for three and declared at 240 for nine. Shanto, who had started the day on 58, was the sixth batter dismissed after scoring 87 from 150 balls with seven fours. Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 24 and Mushfiqur Rahim 22.

For Pakistan, Hasan Ali and Noman Ali took three wickets apiece, for 52 and 76 runs respectively, while Shaheen Shah Afridi claimed two.

The second Test begins in Sylhet on Friday.
