Gary Kirsten Quits as Pakistan Coach Six Months Into Role

Gary Kirsten has stepped down as the head coach of Pakistan’s ODI and T20I teams just six months after his appointment. Kirsten, who joined PCB on a two-year contract in April 2024, has left the position with immediate effect.

The PCB confirmed that Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s Test coach, will take on Kirsten’s responsibilities during the Australian tour, overseeing six white-ball matches.

Kirsten’s departure reportedly follows mounting tensions within the PCB’s coaching setup. ESPNCricinfo reported it as a “developing rift between Pakistan’s newly-appointed coaches, Kirsten and Gillespie, and the PCB since the board decided to strip them off selection powers”.

PCB had consolidated selection authority within a new, standalone selection committee, excluding both coaches from it.
