Babar Azam suffered a hand injury while batting on the second day of the three-day match between Pakistan and Professional County Club Select XI at The County Ground in Beckenham on Friday.

Babar was hit just above the right-hand batting glove off Manny Lumsden’s delivery when on five off 16 balls. A Pakistan team spokesman confirmed Babar, as a precautionary measure, will not take any further part in the three-day match but will participate in Pakistan’s first training session at Headingley on Monday.

A similarly worrying blow had cut short Babar’s England tour in 2018, when he retired hurt on 68 in the first Test at Lord’s, which Pakistan went on to win by nine wickets. He was struck on the left forearm by Ben Stokes and later ruled out of the remainder of that series with a fracture just above the wrist.

Earlier, Pakistan, resuming their first innings in reply to PCCS XI’s 305, were bowled out for 238, with Abdullah Shafique top-scoring on 61. He had retired on 54, but returned to the middle after Pakistan had slipped to 212 for seven. Abdullah struck nine fours and a six in a 132-ball knock.

Saud Shakeel, playing his first competitive match since the second Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet, scored 30 off 53 balls with six fours. He batted at No. 5 and looked comfortable before falling to Lumsden, who finished with two for 24.

Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, one of three players named in England’s first Test squad, strengthened his claims for a place in the match starting on Wednesday when he returned figures of 20.2-5-75-4. He accounted for Imam-ul-Haq (37, 71b, 5×4), Salman Ali Agha (14, 17b, 3×4), Aamir Jamal (8, 6b, 2×4) and Ghazi Ghori (27, 31b, 4×4).

After securing a 67-run first-innings lead, PCCS XI were 128 for three. Their biggest setback was the double failure of England opener Emilio Gay, who bagged a pair. Dismissed by Mohammad Abbas in the first innings, he was caught at the wicket off Mohammad Ali in the second.

At the close of play, Caleb Falconer was batting on a run-a-ball 52 with nine fours, while Saif Zaib was unbeaten on 24 from 21 balls with two fours.

Mohammad Ali, Salman Ali Agha and Sajid Khan shared the remaining three wickets between them, one apiece.
