LAHORE: Athar Mahmood’s match figures of nine for 99 helped Sialkot record a commanding 311-run victory over Islamabad on the fourth and final day of the fourth-round Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture at the Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Elsewhere, Abbottabad’s Yasir Khan scored 97 but could not save his side from a 247-run defeat to Peshawar at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, where home bowlers Mohammad Irfan and Niaz Khan shared honours. Karachi’s Saad Baig struck 149 and Lahore’s Mohammad Abbas claimed six for 78 as their teams played out a draw at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Meanwhile, the Bahawalpur-Multan fixture at the Diamond Cricket Ground also ended in a stalemate despite Multan’s Ali Usman taking five for 88.

SIALKOT BEAT ISLAMABAD

Athar Mahmood followed up his five for 43 in the first innings with four for 56 to bowl Sialkot to a comprehensive 311-run victory over Islamabad. Test fast bowler Mohammad Ali returned figures of four for 29 as Islamabad, resuming the final day at 107 for three while chasing a 468-run target, were dismissed for 156.

This was Sialkot’s second victory of the season and Islamabad’s second defeat. In the fifth-round action starting Thursday, Sialkot will take on Abbottabad at the Diamond Cricket Ground, while Islamabad will travel to Abbottabad to face FATA at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

PESHAWAR BEAT ABBOTTABAD

Mohammad Irfan took three for 28 and Niaz Khan bagged three for 43 to overshadow a valiant 97 from Yasir Khan as Peshawar registered their third successive win, defeating Abbottabad by 247 runs at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium.

Set a 462-run target after Peshawar declared their second innings at the overnight score of 194 for one, Abbottabad were bowled out for 214 with Yasir Khan the lone fighter, scoring 97 from 173 balls with 12 fours. He was the last batter dismissed, with no other teammate reaching 20.

Niaz Khan, who took four for 56 in Abbottabad’s first-innings 181 in reply to Peshawar’s 448, complemented his effort with three for 43, while Mohammad Irfan finished with three for 28.

In the fifth-round fixtures, Peshawar will meet Faisalabad at the Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium, while Abbottabad, who suffered their first loss, will face Sialkot at the Diamond Cricket Ground.

SAAD BAIG’S 149, ABBAS’S 6-78 IN DRAWN MATCH

Karachi opener Saad Baig scored his second career century in 14 matches, while Lahore’s Mohammad Abbas claimed six for 78 – the 35th time he has taken five or more wickets in an innings in his 204-match career – as the encounter between the traditional rivals ended in a draw.

Karachi, who had conceded a 34-run first-innings lead and resumed the final day at 103 for three, were bowled out for 390. Saad Baig, who had retired hurt the previous day on 59, returned to the crease to complete a polished 149 off 186 balls with 22 fours and two sixes.

Together with Usman Raheed (77, 179b, 10×4), Saad added 114 runs for the seventh wicket after Karachi had slipped to 128 for six.

Test fast bowler Mohammad Abbas was Lahore’s standout performer, returning figures of 24-6-78-6, while young Ubaid Shah took two for 57.

Both teams have now drawn two matches each, though Karachi sit above Lahore on the points table courtesy of one earlier win. In the next round, Karachi will face Bahawalpur at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, while Lahore will meet Multan at the Marghzar Cricket Ground.

BAHAWALPUR-MULTAN MATCH DRAWN

After only one innings was completed in the first three days at the Diamond Cricket Ground, the Bahawalpur-Multan match ended in a draw, with Bahawalpur taking first-innings lead points.

Having scored 501 and then dismissed Multan for 462, Bahawalpur began their second innings on Monday morning and were all out for 239, built around Saifullah Bangash’s 74 and Mohammad Ammar’s 68.

Multan’s Ali Usman was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with five for 88, while Arafat Minhas took two for 35.

When the match was called off after one over in Multan’s second innings, they were five without loss.

This was Multan’s second draw, adding to one win from four matches, while Bahawalpur are still searching for their maiden victory. In the next round, Bahawalpur will face Karachi at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, while Multan will take on Lahore at the Marghzar Cricket Ground.
