Sahir Associates, Wapda & Sbp Win Sixth Round President Trophy Matches
LAHORE: Three matches were decided on the penultimate day of the sixth-round President’s Trophy matches in Karachi on Thursday, while the SNGPL and KRL match was interestingly poised.
Sahir Associates defeated debutants Ghani Glass by six wickets at the State Bank Stadium, WAPDA overpowered PTV by seven wickets at the UBL Sports Complex, and State Bank beat OGDCL by an innings and 90 runs at the National Bank Stadium.
The highlights of the third day’s play were outstanding bowling performances from Sahir Associates’ Khan Zaib and Qasim Akram of State Bank, and an unbeaten 118-run fourth-wicket partnership between Sharoon Siraj and Mohammad Ammar of WAPDA.
At the State Bank Stadium, Khan Zaib followed up his 19-4-86-6 with 18.2-4-58-5 as Ghani Glass, who trailed by 12 runs on the first innings, were dismissed for 200 after starting the day at 166 for six. This was Khan Zaib’s maiden 10-wicket haul in a match since making his first-class debut in the first match of the President’s Trophy against KRL.
Sahir Associates then reached 191 for four to collect maximum points, with Mohammad Faiq and Mohammad Kashif scoring half-centuries and putting on 92 runs for the fourth wicket. Faiq scored 68 not out from 141 balls and Kashif scored a 58-ball 57 with six fours and two sixes.
At the National Bank Stadium, State Bank’s Qasim Akram returned figures of 30-5-83-6 after taking three for 20 in the first innings to set up an innings and 90-run victory over OGDCL.
OGDCL, who were skittled out for 76 in the first innings and allowed State Bank to post 388, were dismissed for 222 after resuming this morning at 125 for five. Qasim Akram was well assisted by Kashif Bhatti, who took three for 61.
At the UBL Sports Complex, Sharoon Siraj scored 75 not out and Mohammad Ammar scored 56 not out to script a seven-wicket victory for WAPDA over defending champions PTV.
PTV added 27 runs to their overnight score of 123 for six and were all-out for 150. This set WAPDA a 179-run target, which they achieved for the loss of three wickets following the 118-run stand between Sharoon and Ammar. Sharoon struck 12 fours and two sixes in a 65-ball innings, while Ammar faced 107 balls and struck eight fours and a six. Nabi Gul was the other notable run-scorer with 31.
The SNGPL and KRL match at the KCCA Stadium remains delicately poised; KRL needs another 120 runs while SNGPL requires four wickets for victory.
SNGPL, after securing a four-run first-innings lead, posted 209 in their second innings after starting the day at 125 for two. KRL’s Mohammad Hamza returned figures of 24-6-40-6 to ensure SNGPL remained within reach.
However, KRL batters faltered for the second time in the match, finishing the day at 114 for six despite opener Saad Baig’s 52 from 96 balls. Saad added 53 runs for the fourth wicket after KRL had slipped to 26 for three, before the side slid again from 79 for three to 85 for six.
SNGPL’s Test bowling pair of Mohammad Ali and Sajid Khan shared five wickets to keep KRL under pressure; Ali picked up three for 23 and Sajid bagged two for 36.
