LAHORE: Format changed but the result remained the same for Pakistan as they were routed by Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first ODI at Mirpur on Wednesday. The first of the three-match series, played on the back of Pakistan’s poor ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, launched their preparations for the ICC Men’s 50-over World Cup 2027, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in the second half of next year.

Pakistan awarded ODI caps to Abdul Samad, Maaz Sadaqat, Sahibzada Farhan, and Shamyl Hussain, but were bundled out for 114 in 30.4 overs after being put into bat. This was Pakistan’s lowest total against Bangladesh, breaking the previous record of 161 in Northampton during the ICC Men’s 50-over World Cup 1999.

Bangladesh ensured they clinically secured the win with plenty of time to spare, racing to victory in 15.1 overs for the loss of just two wickets. Opener Tanzid Hasan stroked his fifth ODI half-century, finishing unbeaten on 67 from 42 balls with seven fours and five sixes.

The two Bangladesh wickets to fall were Saif Hassan (4), dismissed by captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, who finished with one for 35 from five overs, and Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored 27 from 33 balls with five fours. Shanto was accounted for by Mohammad Wasim Jnr, who gave away 24 runs in his three-plus overs.

Among other Pakistan bowlers, Faheem Ashraf conceded 19 runs in two overs, Abrar Ahmed’s three overs cost 25 runs, and Salman Ali Agha was hit for 12 runs in his two overs.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan were rocked by the pace of Nahid Rana and spin of Mehidy Hasan Miraz as they capitulated from 41 for no loss to 114 all-out. Faheem Ashraf saved Pakistan from complete embarrassment, scoring a 47-ball 37 with six fours and a six while batting at No. 8.

Debutants Sahibzada Farhan and Maaz Sadaqat had provided a confident 41-run start before Nahid Rana demolished the top-order, finishing with career-best figures of 7-0-24-5. Nahid dismissed Sahibzada Farhan (27), Maaz Sadaqat (18), Shamyl Hussain (4), Mohammad Rizwan (10), and Salman Ali Agha (5).

Mehidy then got into action, dismissing Abdul Samad (0), Hussain Talat (4), and Shaheen Shah Afridi (4). Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed removed Mohammad Wasim (0) as Pakistan collapsed to 82 for nine. Mustafizur Rahman ended the innings at 114 when he dismissed Faheem Ashraf.

The second and third ODIs will be played on Friday and Sunday.
