LAHORE: Ninety wickets fell on the opening day of the penultimate round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy as the top four teams on the points table continued their dogfight for places in the five-day final.

Leaders Sialkot took a 76-run first-innings lead at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, scoring 186 all out after bowling FATA out for 110. At stumps, FATA were 10 without loss. Second-placed Karachi, who trail Sialkot by 16 points, seized a 133-run first-innings lead when they reached 294 for six at close after dismissing Islamabad for 161.

Third-placed Peshawar and Faisalabad, just one point behind Karachi, kept pressure on the top two while also compounding problems for ninth-placed Multan and bottom-placed Abbottabad. Both Multan and Abbottabad must finish eighth or higher to avoid relegation from next year’s tournament.

Peshawar posted 239 and then reduced Multan to 27 for five at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, while Faisalabad rebounded strongly from 121 all out by skittling Abbottabad for 123 at the Marghzar Cricket Ground. Faisalabad closed on 97 for two, leading Abbottabad by 95 runs with eight second-innings wickets intact.

Eighth-placed Bahawalpur kept alive their hopes of survival when they bowled out Lahore for 140 and then restricted them to 132 for seven at the Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium.

On a day when 90 wickets tumbled across five venues, Abbas Ali (Peshawar), Shamyl Hussain (Islamabad), and Karachi’s Saud Shakeel and Abdullah Fazal produced standout batting performances.

Abbas Ali struck a superb 116 from 136 balls (11 fours, four sixes) in Peshawar’s 239, adding 124 for the eighth wicket with Sajid Khan, who hit 60 off 85 with five fours and three sixes.

Shamyl Hussain fought a lone battle for Islamabad, top-scoring with 85 off 90 balls (13 fours, one six). His 94-run stand with Hasan Nawaz (31) lifted Islamabad to 113 for one before they lost their last eight wickets for only 48 runs.

In reply, Saud Shakeel anchored Karachi’s innings and finished unbeaten on 88 off 121 balls with nine fours and a six. He was well supported by opener Abdullah Fazal, who smashed 73 from 63 balls, hitting six fours and five sixes.

Abbottabad’s Khalid Usman produced the bowling performance of the day, exploiting bowler-friendly conditions to claim seven for 42 as Faisalabad were dismissed for 121. Faisalabad’s Ali Asfand responded with five for 31 to bowl Abbottabad out for 123.

Multan’s Ali Usman returned figures of five for 79 in Peshawar’s 239 before Multan’s batters faltered to reach 27 for five by stumps.

Karachi’s progress to 294 for six was enabled by the half-centuries from Saud and Abdullah after Kashif Bhatti took five for 61 to bowl Islamabad out for 161.

For Sialkot, Usama Mir took four for 11 as FATA were dismissed for 110. Test spinner Asif Afridi (five for 48) and Hayatullah (three for 69) then spun Sialkot out for 186.
