LAHORE: Fast bowlers Mohammad Umar and Kashif Bhatti shared nine wickets between them, and Shan Masood finished with an unbeaten half-century, as Karachi took a giant step forward in their attempt to qualify for the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final.

Umar returned figures of 13.2-2-40-5 and Kashif finished with 20-3-67-4 as table-toppers Sialkot were dismissed for 176 by 20-time champions Karachi on the opening day at the Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium. Karachi, the wild card entrants in the event after failing to qualify through the Hanif Mohammad Trophy, then closed at 144 for three, with Shan Masood unbeaten on 60 from 99 balls (six fours, one six).

Sialkot, who elected to bat first, were rescued from complete disaster by Mehran Mumtaz who, batting at No.8, top-scored with a brilliant 70 from 61 balls (eight fours, four sixes). He had walked in when Sialkot were tottering at 76 for six.

Together with fast bowler Mohammad Ali, Mehran added 44 runs for the final wicket, with Ali dismissed without scoring off six balls.

With both final spots up for grabs, Sialkot (149) entered the last round leading Karachi (138) by 11 points.

ROHAIL NAZIR HELPS ISLAMABAD KEEP PESHAWAR UNDER PRESSURE

Last year’s finalists and third-placed Peshawar saw their hopes of qualifying for the title match take a serious hit when seventh-placed Islamabad — fighting to stay clear of the relegation zone — ended the opening day at 346 for five, thanks to a superb unbeaten century by Rohail Nazir.

Rohail was batting on 113 from 159 balls (13 fours, four sixes), while opener Shamyl Hussain continued his fine form with a blazing 76 from 77 balls (seven fours, five sixes) at the Diamond Cricket Ground.

Shamyl and Abdul Faseeh (31) provided Islamabad with a 120-run opening stand before Rohail, batting at No.4, added 149 for the third wicket with Naseerullah Khan, who scored 73 from 145 balls with 12 fours.

For Peshawar, Mohammad Irfan took two for 66.

Peshawar share third place with Faisalabad on 132 points.

TOP-ORDER AWAAIS KEEPS FAISALABAD’S FINAL HOPES ALIVE

A magnificent century by Mohammad Awais Zafar kept Faisalabad’s final hopes alive, as they reached 305 for nine against Bahawalpur at the Marghzar Cricket Ground.

Awais struck 148 from 177 balls (15 fours, seven sixes) and featured in two crucial partnerships that kept his side in the contest. After Faisalabad slumped to 23 for four, Awais added 150 for the fifth wicket with opener Hasan Raza (53, 132 balls, 8 fours).

He then put on 112 for the sixth wicket with Raees Ahmed (53, 91 balls, 6 fours, 1 six), as no other batter reached double figures.

For eighth-placed Bahawalpur, who are fighting to avoid relegation, Mohammad Imran Randhawa took three for 57, while Mohammad Sudais and Mohammad Azab shared four wickets between them.

IMAM’S 181 GIVES MULTAN HOPE OF AVOIDING RELEGATION

A masterclass from Imam-ul-Haq helped Multan post 360 for five against Abbottabad in a clash between the two bottom-placed sides at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

Imam scored 181 from 232 balls (21 fours, one six) and put on 193 for the third wicket with Sharoon Siraj, who made 83 from 132 balls (nine fours).

Imran Butt contributed 40, while the most successful Abbottabad bowler was Mansoor Ali with three for 63.

Ninth-placed Multan have 73 points, while Abbottabad — who started the round on 67 — now appear certain to be relegated.

FATA’S HAYATULLAH SPINS LAHORE OUT FOR 205

FATA’s Hayatullah returned superb figures of 20.4-2-78-7 as Lahore were bowled out for 205 in a mid-table clash at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium. FATA reached 83 for three at stumps.

Qasim Akram top-scored for Lahore with 53, while other contributions came from Aamir Jamal (32), Hussain Talat (30), Mohib Bhatti (28) and Ali Zaryab (26).

Apart from Hayatullah, Asif Afridi took two for 55.

FATA sit fifth and Lahore sixth after eight matches. Both are out of the final race but safely clear of the relegation zone, ensuring they retain first-class status for next season.
