Saud Shakeel Anchors Pakistan’s Second Innings
Pakistan staged a spirited comeback on a rain-delayed Day 3 of the first Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park, setting a modest target of 148 runs before striking thrice late in the day to keep their hopes alive.
After a delayed start, Pakistan resumed their innings with Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel at the crease. The pair added crucial runs, with Babar completing a well-crafted half-century before falling to Marco Jansen. Saud Shakeel, however, stood firm amidst the chaos. His knock of 84 runs off 135 balls ensured Pakistan posted a fighting total of 237 in their second innings. Jansen was the standout bowler for South Africa, wrapping up the tail quickly after tea and finishing with impressive figures.
Chasing 148, South Africa’s openers Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram began cautiously, but Pakistan’s bowlers struck back. Mohammad Abbas provided the initial breakthrough by dismissing de Zorzi. Khurram Shahzad then struck in the very next over.
Abbas continued his impactful spell, trapping Tristan Stubbs LBW to claim his second wicket. By stumps, South Africa were at 27 for 3, needing 121 more runs to win with seven wickets in hand.
Scores in brief:
Pakistan: 211 & 237
South Africa: 301 & 27/3
