Rickelton and Bavuma Dominate Day One
Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma were the stars of a commanding opening day for South Africa at Newlands, as their centuries propelled the hosts to 316/4 by stumps.
Their brilliant 235-run partnership for the fourth wicket was the highest by a South African pair against Pakistan and at this venue.
South Africa began the day under pressure after losing early wickets. Aiden Markram was the first to go, playing loosely outside off to edge Mohammad Abbas behind. Wiaan Mulder, promoted to No. 3, fell cheaply to a soft dismissal, while Tristan Stubbs also succumbed before lunch.
Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Abbas, extracted enough movement to trouble the batters. However, Pakistan’s early momentum was marred by an unfortunate injury to Saim Ayub, who twisted his ankle in the field. Ayub was stretchered off and later ruled out of the Test.
With South Africa teetering at 72/3, Rickelton and Bavuma steadied the ship in style. Rickelton, unbeaten on 176, was joined by David Bedingham for the final overs of the day. The pair navigated a fading Pakistan attack as the visitors ended the day 10 overs short of the required 90.
Scores in brief:
