Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20: The Evolution of Man-of-Crisis; Faizan Riaz
Final of Quaid-e-Azam season 2019-20 is underway at the National Stadium Karachi between table topper Central Punjab and valiant Northern. In this season we saw so many batsmen scoring tons of runs. Before the final, the top five run-getters were
Imran Butt 934
Kamran Akmal 865
Sami Aslam 864
Salman Butt 827
Imran Farhat 819
Northern has reached to the final due to two prime reasons:
⦁ Skipper Nauman Ali’s heroics
⦁ Collective team effort
However, there was one player who wasn’t among the runs but shined when there was no light. The one who jumped in the fire when others were unable to even stand on their feet. Yes, I am talking about FAIZAN RIAZ. Faizan Riaz is the middle-order batsman for Northern. He played a pivotal role on multiple occasions for his team.
What made Faizan unique among heavyweights mentioned above? He chooses his moments. The moments which stole the limelight during the recent domestic season are described as follows:
Faizan Riaz did a Sehwag
At the Galle test back in 2008, Virender Sehwag stood tall when gigantic batting lineup of India fall apart. The batting line comprised of Laxman, Tendulkar, Ganguly, and Dravid. In the first inning, India were bundled out for 329. In the pie of 329, Sehwag got the lion’s share. The dashing opener scored 201 off 231 deliveries. Due to that fighting double ton, India won the test match by 170 runs.
Northern was in deep trouble when the score was 14 for 3 against Sindh at National stadium. Then in came Sehwag-Esque Faizan Riaz. Faizan took the attack to the opposition and scored match-saving knock of 211 off 200 balls. That game-saving turned out to be the match-winning knock. Faizan’s Northern won the game by 145 runs.
The only difference between the two was their batting position.
Faizan Riaz with the golden arm
Northern was up against Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (KPK) in a do or die situation. KPK only needed a draw to qualify for the final. KPK was on course to pull out a valiant draw when the only required to survive a few overs for the 10 wicket partnership. However, Faizan Riaz had some other plans.
When nothing worked, Nauman Ali threw the ball to Faizan. He brought in his golden arm and bowled a loopy delivery to Junaid Khan. Junaid couldn’t resist himself and tried to hit the ball out of the park. However, he only managed to send the ball in the air, where Umar Amin took an excellent and Northern qualified for the final.
When no one seemed to do, Faizan did it.
Faizan again in the final
Faizan worked with the ball for Northern previously as well. His team had to take the last wicket to win the National T20 Cup (2nd XI’s) final. Faizan again did the trick and snatched the last wicket for his team.
The winning moments…
