Pakistan Super League 2022: Quetta Gladiators Preview

After their title win in PSL 4, the Gladiators have suffered two Group Stage exits and will be looking to bounce back.

Everyone loves an underdog story, and Quetta Gladiators were always thought of as the underdogs of the Pakistan Super League. However, they performed exceptionally well in the first few seasons, finishing as runners-up in PSL 1 & 2 before a maiden title win for Sarfaraz Ahmed’s dominant side in Karachi in PSL 4. But the last two seasons haven’t entirely gone to plan for the Purple Force, and the Gladiators have been knocked out in the Group Stage on both occasions, including a last-place finish in PSL 6.

Several factors have played a role in the Gladiators’ decline, with the most apparent one for PSL 5 being Umar Akmal’s ban one day before the start of the tournament. In PSL 6, the Gladiators struggled without an adequate replacement for Shane Watson, while many factors outside their hands also put them at a disadvantage, such as player availability and tosses. At times, it felt as though the Gladiators’ squad construction was also lacking.

With a squad overhaul the need of the hour and unfavorable draft picks, the Quetta Gladiators were busy in the trade window ahead of the draft. However, the team management remains the same as expected, with Sarfaraz Ahmed captain and Moin Khan Head Coach. Umar Gul reprises his role as the franchise’s bowling coach after being appointed ahead of PSL 6.
