Pakistan Super League 2022: Karachi Kings Preview

Babar Azam will captain the franchise for the seventh edition of the league as the Kings look to win a second title.

Lahore Qalandars may be one team that rival teams’ fans have targeted to poke fun at over the years. However, Karachi Kings were in the same boat for quite a while as they repeatedly faltered in the Pakistan Super League knockouts. All that changed in PSL 5, where they went on to their first (and only) final and converted it into a maiden title win. The largest and most populous city of Pakistan finally had a PSL trophy to its name.

With Babar Azam starting to blossom into the fine cricketer he was destined to be, Karachi fans may have been dreaming of the start of domination. Those dreams, however, were crushed in PSL 6. Despite topping the table after the first leg of the tournament, the Kings barely made it to the playoffs and were promptly knocked out by eventual finalists, Peshawar Zalmi. That makes it 5/6 seasons now where they have been knocked out in the playoffs.

PSL 7 has heralded a few changes at the franchise. With Babar Azam taking over Pakistan captaincy in all formats and catapulting to global stardom, it was only a matter of time before Karachi Kings made the call. Sure enough, the world’s premier white-ball batter was announced as the captain, replacing Imad Wasim. Meanwhile, they also made a shrewd acquisition for the Head Coach role in former England coach and data enthusiast Peter Moores.
